Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on June 25, 2019 What Is the Transfiguration of Our Lord? The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord recalls the revelation of Christ's glory on Mount Tabor in the presence of three of His disciples, Peter, James, and John. Christ was transfigured before their eyes, shining with divine light, and He was joined by Moses and Elijah, representing the Old Testament Law and the prophets. The Transfiguration occurred in the early months of the year after Jesus revealed to His disciples that He would be put to death in Jerusalem and before He made His way to Jerusalem for the events of His Passion during Holy Week. How Is the Date Determined? Like most feasts of Our Lord (with the major exception of Easter, the feast of His Resurrection), the Transfiguration falls on the same date every year, which means that the feast falls on a different day of the week each year. Though the Transfiguration took place in February or March, it has always been celebrated later in the year, probably because the actual date would have fallen during the penitential period of Lent, and feasts of Our Lord are occasions of joy. In 1456, in celebration of the Christian victory over the Muslim Turks at the Siege of Belgrade, Pope Callixtus III extended the celebration of the Feast of the Transfiguration to the universal Church, and set its date as August 6.
