Welcome to Verse of the Day!

And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. (ESV)

Today's Inspiring Thought: The Blessings of Obedience

At times, obedience to God feels mostly like sacrifice, but there are blessings and rewards when we obey the voice of the Lord and submit to his will.

Eerdman's Bible Dictionary says, "True 'hearing,' or obedience, involves the physical hearing that inspires the hearer, and a belief or trust that in turn motivates the hearer to act in accordance with the speaker's desires."

Pastor J. H. McConkey (1859-1937) said to a physician friend one day, "Doctor, what is the exact significance of God's touching Jacob upon the sinew of his thigh?"

The doctor replied, "The sinew of the thigh is the strongest in the human body. A horse could scarcely tear it apart."

McConkey then realized that God has to break us down at the strongest part of our self-life before he can have his own way of blessing us.

Some of the Blessing of Obedience

Obedience proves our love.

John 14:15
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (ESV)

1 John 5:2–3
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. (ESV)

Obedience brings joy.

Psalm 119:1–8
Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths.

You have charged us to keep your commandments carefully. Oh, that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees! Then I will not be ashamed when I compare my life with your commands. As I learn your righteous regulations, I will thank you by living as I should! I will obey your decrees. Please don't give up on me! (NLT)

Obedience brings blessings to others.

Genesis 22:18
"And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed me." (NLT)

When we are obedient, we are certainly in God's will. When we’re in his will, we are sure to experience even more of God's blessings. In this way, we are living as he intended for us to live.

Obedience, you might say, is our GPS or navigational system for becoming more and more like Jesus Christ.
