By one definition, stress is "a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances." When we think about it, we might ruefully conclude that life itself is a series of adverse and demanding circumstances. You can argue, in fact, that a life without the challenges of adverse and demanding circumstances would be rather boring and unrewarding. And psychologists and other experts sometimes argue that stress itself is not the problem, but rather it is our techniques for processing that stress--or our failure to process it--that can raise issues and elevate stress to damaging levels. But if stress is a fact of life, what do we do about it? It is well documented that our feelings of stress can compromise not only our emotional and spiritual well-being, but also compromise our physical health. When we don't know how to manage those circustances, they feel overwhelming, and at such times we need to turn for help. Well adjusted people manage to develop a variety of techniques for coping with stress. For some, a regular routine of physical exercise or relaxation practices may diffuse the damaging effects of stress. Others may even require some form of medical intervention or emotional therapy. Everyone has different ways of dealing with the stress that is inherent in human life, and for Christians, a key component of that coping strategy is prayer to God. Here is a simple prayer asking God to help us get through those times when parents, friends, exams or other circumstances are making us feel stressed out. The Prayer Lord, I'm just having some trouble managing this stressful time in my life. The stress is just getting to be too much for me, and I need your strength to get me through. I know you are a pillar for me to lean on in tough times, and I pray that you will continue to provide me with ways to make my life a little less burdensome. Lord, I pray that you provide me your hand and walk me through the dark times. I ask that you reduce the burdens in my life or show me the path to get things done or rid myself of the things weighing me down. Thank you, Lord, for all you do in my life and how you will provide for me, even in these stressful times.
