Jesus Calms the Storm - Matthew 14:32-33

And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." (ESV)

Today's Inspiring Thought: Jesus Calms the Storm

In this verse, Peter had just walked on stormy waters with Jesus. When he took his eyes off the Lord and focused on the storm, he began to sink under the weight of his troubling circumstances. But when he cried out for help, Jesus caught him by the hand and raised him up out of his seemingly impossible surroundings.

Then Jesus and Peter climbed into the boat and the storm abated. The disciples in the boat had just witnessed something miraculous: Peter and Jesus walking on raging waters and then the sudden calming of the waves as they boarded the vessel.

Everyone in the boat began to worship Jesus.

Maybe your circumstances feel like a modern-day reproduction of this scene.

If not, remember this next time you're going through a stormy stretch of life—God may be about to reach out his hand and walk with you on the furious waves. You may feel tossed about, barely staying afloat, but God could be planning to do something miraculous, something so stunning that everyone who sees it will fall down and worship the Lord, including you.

This scene in the book of Matthew took place in the middle of the dark night. The disciples were weary from battling the elements all night. Surely they were afraid. But then God, Master of Storms and Controller of Waves, came to them in the darkness. He stepped into their boat and calmed their raging hearts.

The Gospel Herald once published this humorous epigram on storms:

A woman was seated next to a minister on an airplane during a storm.
The woman: “Can’t you do something about this awful storm?”
The Minister: “Madam, I’m in sales, not management.”

God is in the business of managing storms. If you find yourself in one, you can trust the Master of Storms.

Although we may never walk on water like Peter, we will go through difficult, faith-testing circumstances. In the end, as Jesus and Peter climbed into the boat, the storm immediately ceases. When we have Jesus "in our boat" he calms the storms of life so that we can worship him. That alone is miraculous.
