God Shows Us Unconditional Love God is the ultimate in demonstrating unconditional love, and He sets the example for us all in how to love without expectation. Romans 5:8But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful. (CEV) 1 John 4:8But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (NLT) 1 John 4:16We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. (NLT) John 3:16For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (NLT) Ephesians 2:8You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better than we deserve. This is God’s gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own. (CEV) Jeremiah 31:3The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” (NKJV) Titus 3:4-5But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. (ESV) Philippians 2:1Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? (NLT) Unconditional Love Is Powerful When we love unconditionally, and when we receive unconditional love, we find that there is power in those feelings and actions. We find hope. We find courage. Things we never knew to expect come from giving to one another without any expectations. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (NIV) 1 John 4:18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (NIV) 1 John 3:16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. (NIV) 1 Peter4:8And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” (NKJV) Ephesians 3:15-19From whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. (NASB) 2 Timothy 1:7For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. (NASB) Sometimes Unconditional Love Is Hard When we love unconditionally, it means that we even have to love people in tough times. This means loving someone when they’re being rude or inconsiderate. It also means loving our enemies. This means unconditional love takes work. Matthew 5:43-48You have heard people say, “Love your neighbors and hate your enemies.” But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for anyone who mistreats you. Then you will be acting like your Father in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both good and bad people. And he sends rain for the ones who do right and for the ones who do wrong. If you love only those people who love you, will God reward you for that? Even tax collectors love their friends. If you greet only your friends, what’s so great about that? Don’t even unbelievers do that? But you must always act like your Father in heaven. (CEV) Luke 6:27But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. (NLT) Romans 12:9-10Be sincere in your love for others. Hate everything that is evil and hold tight to everything that is good. Love each other as brothers and sisters and honor others more than you do yourself. (CEV) 1 Timothy 1:5You must teach people to have genuine love, as well as a good conscience and true faith. (CEV) 1 Corinthians 13:1If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. (NLT) Romans 3:23For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (NLT) Mark 12:31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these. (NIV) Cite this Article Format mla apa chicago Your Citation Mahoney, Kelli.
