The Bible has quite a bit to say about disobedience. God's Word is a guide for our lives, and it reminds us that, when we disobey God, we sadden him. He desires the best for us, and sometimes we take the easy way out and turn away from Him. Here are some of the things the Bible has to say about why we disobey, how God reacts to our disobedience, and what it means to Him when we don't disobey Him:

When Temptations Lead to Disobedience

There are plenty of reasons we disobey God and sin. We all know that there are so many temptations out there, waiting to lead us away from God.

James 1:14-15
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. (NLT)

Genesis 3:16
To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” (NIV)

Joshua 7:11-12
Israel has sinned and broken my covenant! They have stolen some of the things that I commanded must be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings. That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. For now Israel itself has been set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction. (NLT)

Galatians 5:19-21
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. (NIV)

Disobedience Against God

When we disobey God, we are against Him. He asks us, through His Commandments, Jesus' teachings, etc. to follow His way. When we disobey God, there are usually consequences. Sometime we have to remember His rules are there to protect us.

John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commands. (NIV)

Romans 3:23
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (NLT)

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. (NLT)

Luke 6:46
Why do you keep on saying that I am your Lord, when you refuse to do what I say? (CEV)

Psalm 119:136
Rivers of water run down from my eyes, because men do not keep Your law. (NKJV)

2 Peter 2:4
For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment. (NLT)

What Happens When We Don't Disobey

When we obey God, we glorify Him. We set the example for others, and we are His light. We reap the pleasure God has in seeing us do what He had hoped for us.

1 John 1:9
But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away. (CEV)

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NKJV)

2 Chronicles 7:14
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. (NLT)

Romans 10:13
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (NLT)

Revelation 21:4
And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. (NASB)

Psalm 127:3
Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. (NIV)
