Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on April 16, 2019 None of us are perfect, but when we find ourselves backsliding the Bible is a great place to go for advice. Here are some Bible verses on backsliding that may help you: Proverbs 14:14You harvest what you plant, whether good or bad. (CEV) Proverbs 28:13If you don’t confess your sins, you will be a failure. But God will be merciful if you confess your sins and give them up. (CEV) Hebrews 10:26-31No sacrifices can be made for people who decide to sin after they find out about the truth. They are God’s enemies, and all they can look forward to is a terrible judgment and a furious fire. If two or more witnesses accused someone of breaking the Law of Moses, that person could be put to death. But it is much worse to dishonor God’s Son and to disgrace the blood of the promise that made us holy. And it is just as bad to insult the Holy Spirit, who shows us mercy. We know that God has said he will punish and take revenge. We also know that the Scriptures say the Lord will judge his people. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God! (CEV) Isaiah 1:4-5Oh, what a sinful nation they are — loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick. (NLT) Isaiah 1:18-20“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool. If you will only obey me, you will have plenty to eat. But if you turn away and refuse to listen, you will be devoured by the sword of your enemies. I, the Lord, have spoken!” (NLT) 1 John 1:8-10If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. (NKJV) Hebrews 6:4-6For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened—those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come — and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame. (NLT) Matthew 24:11-13Many false prophets will come and fool a lot of people. Evil will spread and cause many people to stop loving others. But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved. (CEV) Mark 3:29But he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation” (NKJV) John 3:36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. (NIV) John 15:5-6“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. (NKJV) James 4:6In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say, “God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble.” (CEV) Romans 3:28So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law. (NLT) Jeremiah 3:12Go, proclaim this message toward the north: “‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am faithful,’ declares theLord, ‘I will not be angry forever. (NIV) Jeremiah 3:22“Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding.” “Yes, we will come to you, for you are the Lord our God. (NIV) Jeremiah 8:5Why then have these people turned away? Why does Jerusalem always turn away? They cling to deceit; they refuse to return. (NIV) Jeremiah 14:7Although our sins testify against us, do something, Lord, for the sake of your name. For we have often rebelled; we have sinned against you. (NIV) Hosea 4:16Israel is stubborn, like a stubborn heifer. So should the Lord feed her like a lamb in a lush pasture? (NLT) Hosea 11:7For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me. (NLT) Hosea 14:1Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for your sins have brought you down. (NLT) 2 Corinthians 13:5Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith. (NLT) 2 Chronicles 7:14And My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (NASB) 2 Peter 1:21Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God. (NLT) 2 Peter 2:9So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment. (NLT) Ephesians 1:4Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people. (CEV) Ephesians 2:8-9You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better than we deserve. This is God’s gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own. It isn’t something you have earned, so there is nothing you can brag about. (CEV) Luke 8:13The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation. (NLT) Luke 18:1One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. (NLT) 2 Timothy 2:15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
