Since Kether is at the top of the tree and its energy flows down to all the other parts of it, Metatron is the angel who supervises the entire Tree of Life and its cosmic energies. Here's how Metatron represents the tree's crown throughout the universe: Linking Energies Between Divine and Human As the angel who oversees the Tree of Life's crown, Metatron (who tradition says was a human being -- the biblical prophet Enoch -- before ascending to heaven) serves as the angelic link between God's energy and the spiritual energy of human beings who are seeking to grow closer to God, believers say. "In the Tree of Life in Kabbalah he stands at the top as the angel of Yahweh and is also credited with giving the wisdom of the Kabbalah to mankind; he is charged with the sustaining of mankind and seen as the link between the human and the divine," writes Julia Cresswell in her book The Watkins Dictionary of Angels: Over 2,000 Entries on Angels and Angelic Beings. Metatron "dwells in the energy closest to the Divine and helps create positive love vibrations to sustain the Universe, but he is also chiefly concerned with humanity and its connection that Divine force," writes Rose VanDen Eynden in her book Metatron: Invoking the Angel of God's Presence. "Because of his close proximity to Creator and his intimate knowledge and love for humanity, Metatron is God’s ultimate emissary." Maggy Whitehouse writes in her book Kabbalah Made Easy that Kether "is primarily associated with Metatron, the only known being who is both human and angel. He was once Enoch, the first ascended man who became one with the Divine. Metatron is the access point between God and the rest of the creation and the great High Priest. Some people mistakenly refer to Metatron as their guardian or guide, but he is the ultimate guide for all humanity, not individuals." In their book Tarot Talismans: Invoke the Angels of Tarot, Chic Cicero and Sandra Tabatha Cicero write: "Metatron is responsible for presenting God and human to each other. He is the link to the divine, and is responsible for increasing the flow of light to the initiate." Bring Spiritual Balance to Creation Metatron helps all of creation maintain the proper balance of spiritual energy, say, believers, by sending energy down the Tree of Life all the way to Archangel Sandalphon, an angel who is often considered to be Metatron's spiritual brother. Then the Shekinah (the female part of God) reflects that energy back up the tree again, so that spiritual energy is constantly flowing between God, angels, and people. Janet McClure writes in her book Prelude to Ascension: Tools for Transformation: "If you look at the tree you will see Metatron at Kether at the top of the tree, and Sandalphon at Malkuth at the bottom of the tree. These two work together frequently. Isn’t it interesting that the top and the bottom of the tree are so closely connected? This is for balance and focus in the physical." In Metatron: Invoking the Angel of God's Presence, VanDen Eynden writes: "Metatron is closely associated with God, becoming the lesser God through his connection with the Tetragrammaton. Thus, Metatron is the male aspect of God, with the female aspect being Shekinah. ... it becomes the quest of God’s male aspect (Metatron) to reunite with God’s female aspect (Shekinah) to bring balance to the universe. Only through this unification can peace be achieved in all realms." "Inherent in Metatron’s nature, then," she continues, "are his role in helping balance the cosmos, and his dedication to helping humanity to achieve this on both a small scale (in daily life) as well as on a broader, more universal scale." Human Enlightenment in Proper Balance If people approach Metatron with reverence and humility, he will enlighten them with God's wisdom, believers say. But they add that people should beware of trying to use such wisdom for selfish purposes. "Metatron will lead us straight to God if we are capable of holding balanced contact with such power, or if we fail to do so, we shall ‘fall’ back to the bottom [of the Tree of Life] at Malkuth," writes William G. Gray in his the book The Ladder of Lights. "Everything depends on whether we attempt to confine Divinity within ourselves or extend ourselves into Divinity. Any mortal trying to hold Divine Power inside the limits of their own earthly personality will be disintegrated by it, as our mental hospitals and political parties can show. ... Those who seek the Divine in order to enlarge themselves earthwardly will assuredly be destroyed by the same law that explodes an over-pressurized container, or over-massed plutonium. After initial instability comes to a final explosion. ... The part cannot be greater than the whole, and no mortal is bigger than God." McClure writes in Prelude to Ascension that Metatron distributes "beautiful, pure direct light from the Source" to human beings. "He begins the distribution of the light to the various subdepartments of Kether and then down the tree toward Sandalphon." People may feel more comfortable asking an angel like Metatron for enlightenment rather than approaching God directly, writes McClure. "Metatron can be utilized to tune you into the Source if you have some hesitation in approaching the Source directly. You will still get the essence of the purity of the Source but you won’t be as overawed by his overpowering all-knowingness. It is his responsibility and his privilege to represent the Source." However, writes Gray in The Ladder of Lights, those who seek enlightenment through the Tree of Life must always keep in mind that their goal should be doing God's will rather than their own. "Our little earthly selves must open out into the I AM so that we become IT. Metatron knows the way of this and will teach us truly if we ask him. ... "This is why the prayer ‘Thy will not mine be done’ has such tremendous meaning. The will (or direction) of the true I AM should govern the ‘Lesser YHWH’ or Metatron in each of us so that both force-flows work together as one."
